Parkdale Project Read’s Literacy and Basic Skills (LBS) program builds a range of skills, knowledge, and competencies that support learners in their efforts to gain personal independence, expand their employment opportunities, and/or pursue further education. The LBS program supports learners at different levels of literacy, and can serve as a bridge to PPR’s Academic Upgrading Program.
At Parkdale Project Read we take a holistic approach to literacy, facilitating not only for the acquisition of literacy skills, but supporting the practice of these in everyday day life – whether it be reading the newspaper, completing job application forms, conducting online research, or advocating for oneself at home or within the wider community. We recognize that for our learners, progress is measured in many ways – in terms of reading and writing ability, but also in terms of ability to take part in activities with others, care for and support children, take on new challenges, and voice their opinions.
In collaboration with a host of community organizations and partners, Parkdale Project Read hosts guest facilitators and offers workshops including: Driver’s Education, Financial Literacy, Legal Education, Computer Literacy, Health & Wellness, and Election Literacy.
